Jan 30, 2016 - If I click yes, FSX-SE crashes; if I click No, I can get to the Free Flight screen but. ORBX FTX Global, FreeMeshX, FlyTampa Copenhagen and Boston, FSDT JFK v2. EDIT 3: It looks like the Spotlights issue is a separate one. FlyTampa's Boston International is an excellent FSX add on with great detail and frame rates. Download Overland Airbus Series-FS9 and FSX torrent or any other torrent from the. PLEASE get FLYTAMPA's Boston V3 for FSX and FLYTAMPA's.
Microsoft will never make a flight sim again. I don't know how long you've been gone so I'll give you a run down.
The rights for FSX were sold to a company called Dovetail (you may know them for Train Sim). They put it on steam and called it FSX Steam Edition. It's essentially the same as Boxed FSX, but has a few config tweaks and has a few bugs fixed. The rights for ESP (the professional sim FSX was made from) were sold to Lockheed Martin (yes the plane company).
They made Prepar3D (P3D). We are currently on v3.5 of P3D.
X-Plane has been around for a long time, but really came into the market against FSX with X-Plane 10 back in 2010. X-Plane 10 just reached the end of it's life back in October with 10.51.
X-Plane 11 just came into a public beta and is expected to release some time Q1 this year. The best new flight sim? There's no argument that you can make that FSX is any better than X-Plane these days. So if you want to get back into flight sim, take FSX out of your mind and throw it away.
It's antiquated. The choice between P3D and X-Plane on the other hand isn't as easy. If you don't really have any addons, I'd jump on X-Plane right now. You can buy a X-Plane 10 and 11 bundle on x-plane.com right now for $60. X-Plane I feel really is the future and it'll cost you less in the long run. It has a lot more freeware than P3D and (at times) is just a lot less of a pain.
Also, I forgot to explain, P3D is a 32 bit program, while X-Plane is 64 bit. This essentially means that P3D can only use around 4GB of RAM while X-Plane can theoretically use 16.8 million terabytes of RAM. P3D is held back by the 4GB limit meaning that it is really hard to have complex planes and great looking scenery without crashing. X-Plane doesn't have this issue. There have been rumors of P3D v4 being 64bit, which sounds nice and all but in reality it's a nightmare. Every single plane, scenery, utility, etc. Will have to be reworked to work with a 64bit program, which is a huge task.
I'd except many addon devs to charge for a 64bit version (many already charge for seperate P3D and FSX versions) which will burn a huge hole in your pocket if you choose P3D right now. EDIT: The only argument I can make for P3D is the quality of addons. Right now, airport and airplane addons are quite a bit better in P3D.
Between FSDreamTeam, FlyTampa, and the rest of the really good airport devs, P3D has some pretty good payware scenery. P3D also has a lot more selection with planes than X-Plane. On the GA side, I'd say they are pretty even. P3D has some stars in the GA world like A2A, but I feel that the AirFoilLabs 172, some of Carenado's offerings, and the reality expansion packs for some Carenado planes are really good X-Plane. On the airliner side, P3D is better.
Microsoft won't be releasing another flight sim. X-Plane 11 is currently in Beta and will be releasing soon. In my opinion it is the best simulation out there today, with its only competition being P3D, which is, to my understanding, an improved version of FSX. X-Plane is more realistic to fly, performs better graphically and has vastly superior autogen scenery. A downside is that at the moment it doesn't have as many high quality add-ons as P3D/FSX, but that will in my opinion change fairly soon, as many more people are turning towards X-Plane with the release of XP11. In the past it was a pain to set up because of a horrible user interface but that's been addressed with XP11. In addition to currently available FSX:SteamEdition, P3D, and Xplane all mentioned by others, Dovetail is working on it's own new flight sim which they've currently released a 'lite' version of called Dovetail Flight School and aerosoft is working on aerosoft FS2.
I haven't played either of these two other options, but dovetails new sim looks pretty much like an incremental improvement on FSX (many claim it's looks essentially the same as FSX:SE) and aerosofts platform has nice graphics but is more of a VFR only sim. Both project details can be found on Steam.
